And then there were four

Tonight's So You Think You Can Dance episode opened with a Tyce choreographed group routine that was very dramatic, emotional and even sad. But it did showcase the top six's technique. I enjoyed it.

Tonight's episode also featured the return of some of last season's favorites. The four routines nominated for Emmy's were performed, including Twitch and Katie in Mercy and Chelsie and Mark in Bleeding Love. It was great to see them again and to also be reminded at how great (and memorable) routines can be.

As far as special guests are concerned, there was also a performance by the dance troupe JabbaWockeeZ, who are best known as the winners of the first season of America's Best Dance Crew, as well as a performance from musical guest Sean Paul.

But the real business of the night was finding out who made it to next week's finale. We found out right away that Jeanine and Brandon were moving on, but Cat pointed out more than once that that did not mean they were the dancers who received the most votes. So at this point we have no idea who is being favored by the public. At the end of the hour we found out that Kayla and Evan were also through to next week, which means the Melissa and Ade were the dancers sent home one week too early.

What did you think of the results? Who do you think should/will win this season? Leave me comments.

Spoiler: Entourage - Things keep a changing

This week's episode was Turtle's birthday. The show started with his mother giving him a hard time about pictures in People magazine of him and Jamie, which leads to Turtle feeling like a loser. To celebrate Turtle's big day, Vince takes all the guys to the racetrack where they race, which actually also qualifies as practice for Vince for the movie he is filming. Vince then gives Turtle his present - a $240,000 Ferrari. Later in the show we find out that as a birthday present, Jamie also got Turtle a sports car. This further makes Turtle feel like a loser. He tells them he could buy himself a car and seems to be a bit too sad for his birthday. Turtle then goes to Ari for "career advice" and we find out Turtle is looking for investors for a business deal. On his 30th birthday, Turtle is realizing he needs to be more independent and live his own life. At the end of the episode we find out that Turtle plans to go back to school to further this attempt at independence.

In other happenings, E's client Charlie is fired from the show he created after a test group found the show funny but Charlie unlikeable. E decides to fight for Charlie and even claims it was racism that led to his dismissal, but it doesn't help. Charlie is still off the show but we got to see a new side of E, one where he fights for what he thinks is right.

(Side note: Doesn't the actress who plays Ashley look like she is 15 years old? She is very annoying. I was almost sad when E, at the end of the episode, admitted to Vince that he thinks he actually likes her. I want her off the show asap.)

Also, I just want to point out, that while the interaction between Ari and Lloyd while Ari is testing Lloyd's stamina is entertaining, it is almost too mean. Telling him not to smile? Almost too awful.

As an apology, I am sorry this post came so late. But if you watched the episode feel free to let me know what you thought of it. Also, let me know if you are thus far enjoying the season. What do you hope to see happen this season? I want something shocking to happen to shake things up.

Former SNL star set to make Weekend Update appearances

According to this story, Amy Poehler is set to resume the co-anchor chair of Weekend Update when the Thursday specials begin airing Sept. 16. She has so far signed on for two episodes and will join co-star Seth Meyers as the anchor. I love these two together so this news is especially important to me. I didn't get on the Parks and Recreation bandwagon but am happy I will get to see Amy back in her comfort zone.

SYTYCD: I can't believe next week is the finale

With only one week to go before we name America's favorite dancer, I have no idea who I think should or will win this season. And, as Nigel pointed out, no one really stands out as stars right now. The public has been voting on choreography instead of performance since all of the dancers have kind of leveled off in regards to talent. (For the record, this is how I feel about the breast cancer dance from last week. I think it was worthy of votes because of the choreography but not necessarily the performance.) But I do think Mary's advice for the voters was important: Don't just look at this week's performance, reflect on everything and make a decision based on that. All this said, by the end of tonight's episode we will have a top four and we will be oh so close to naming a winner. But before we do that, let's recap what happened on last night's show. And, before I forget, let me say that Lil C was the guest judge.

1) The guys performed a group routine choreographed by Sonya
This was supposed to be a Willy Wonka themed dance, but I didn't really see this connection. Regardless, I thought this was a memorable performance. They are all so strong, both as dancers and physically, and they were so together in their movements. It was great, quirky choreography and they all performed it well. For the judges, they really need to stop singling out Evan. He's in the top three for a reason and he did just as well as the other two guys.
2) Jeanine and Ade danced a samba choreographed by Louis
This was not choreographed as a traditional samba; Louis pushed the envelope of sexiness and there were even moments of hip hop and jazz thrown into the choreography. Some moments of the performance were great but others were awful; this goes for their hip work as well. The dancing was choppy at times and the samba rolls sucked. It looked forced and I wasn't really feeling it. But Jeanine looked sexy.
3) Kayla's solos always disappoint. This week she just kicked and flung her arms around.
4) Melissa and Evan danced a Broadway routine choreographed by Tyce
This is totally Evan's style and he was at home in this performance. The dance was high energy and their personalities really got the chance to shine. It was fun choreography and the performance met my expectations.
5) Ade's solo this week was too frantic. The only good moment was when he paused and smiled for the camera.
6) Kayla and Brandon danced a contemporary routine choreographed by Stacey Tookey
This routine was full of very sensual/powerful movements. I think Kayla outperformed Brandon here but I do think Brandon was always there for her. I loved the beginning when Kayla was in the foreground and Brandon was dancing in the background. I think this was great choreography and the performance was moving.
7) I have no real comment on Melissa's solo, but I do want to say that I just wasn't feeling it tonight.
8) Jeanine and Ade's second performance was a Tabitha and Napoleon hip hop routine
The premise of this dance was that the couple had just been evicted from their apartment. They really attacked the movements and the anger was portrayed successfully but there were moments when I wish it had been more hard hitting. When they danced with the boxes on their feet it looked dangerous, but overall I believed the dance and enjoyed it.
9) Brandon's solo was breathtaking. It was full of very powerful movements, which matched the powerful music. And the fact that he was mostly naked will certainly get him votes. He truly left it all on the stage with that performance and proved he deserves to be in the top finale.
10) For Melissa and Evan's second dance they performed a quickstep choreographed by Louis
This dance style is almost always the kiss of death. With this performance in particular, the song, and therefore the choreography, was so fast. Because of this the dance felt rushed and I could not appreciate it. It was OK, but it didn't impress me in any way.
11) Jeanine always manages to be entertaining and show technique with her solos.
12) Evan has such a great personality. I love watching his solos. And, personally, I think this was one of his best solos.
13) Kayla and Brandon danced a Doriana disco for their second dance
As usual, this dance was so fast, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. Brandon is made for this style because he is so strong. I thought the death spirals were awful and some of the transitions were choppy, but I really liked the lifts. Overall, it was a good routine but I did not enjoy it as much as Mary and Nigel did.
14) The girls performed a group routine choreographed by Sonya
In this dance the girls were supposed to portray superheroes. It was a powerful and sharp performance that was, once again, choreographed excellently. I don't think the girls were as great as the guys, but it was still impressive.

After these performances I cannot imagine the finale without Brandon and Kayla. That said, I think Melissa and Ade should be sent home. What do you think? Are you excited about the finale next week/sad the season is done? Who are you rooting for to win?

Is old age already setting in?

I'm going to blame this on forgetfulness and busyness, but for whatever reason I completely forgot to watch Entourage this week. I promise to watch it as soon as possible and post about it shortly after. But if you feel the need, feel free to leave comments about the episode and let me know how you liked it. I heard it was Turtle's birthday. Anything exciting happen?

More to Love ... or Hate?

I have never been a fan of reality shows like The Bachelor, but I have to admit that I was intrigued by the concept of the new Fox reality show More to Love. The basis is that the man at the center of the show is supposed to find love amongst a group of women. The twist is that these women as supposed to represent the true female population - they are all ... heavy. They wear sizes 14 or 16, which is the size the average American woman wears. The show's website calls it an "inspirational new series" and I think the show has potential to be just that. But there is also a fine line. If these women are truly a representation of the American average, then why did the show need to be named More to Love? I didn't watch the show when it premiered last night but if you did I would love to hear what you thought of it. Does it portray size as an obstacle or are the women confident in their bodies? Let me know your opinions and maybe someday soon I will watch an episode.

An almost too suggestive Melrose Place ad

I in no way plan to watch the new Melrose Place starting this fall, mostly because I did not watch the original and feel no need to watch the second round, but I did want to post the ad the CW recently released for the show. I know the CW has always gone for shock value in its Gossip Girl ads and I'm guessing this is also the plan for Melrose Place though I'm not so sure it actually works. What do you think? Does this ad make you want to watch or go and throw up?

SYTYCD's 100th episode

Tonight's So You Think You Can Dance result show also served as a celebration honoring the show turning 100. There were tons of old contestants in the audience, which was great because it is always nice to see friendly and familiar faces. There was even a montage highlighting the show's five seasons that, as usual, moved me almost to tears. (I don't know what it is about montages but they always choke me up.)

But the show opened with a group dance that I was shocked to hear was choreographed by Mia. It was A Chorus Line inspired and seemed much more like something Tyce would choreograph. The dancers were pristine and sharp and their movements were all perfectly timed, which was very consistent with the theme. I enjoyed the routine.

As part of the celebration, the show's three Emmy award winning dances were performed. So we got to see the Wade Robson choreographed hummingbird and the flower dance performed by Hok and Jamie; Mia Michaels' bench routine performed by Travis and Heidi; and the season two group routine Ramalama that was not only choreographed by Wade, but he also performed in it tonight.

Also featured tonight was the Katie Holmes performance that has been hyped for a few weeks. In this Judy Garland inspired piece she not only danced but sang, GASP. (Or, should I say, pretended to sing. She was totally lip syncing.) The package was more like a movie than a performance; I was expecting it to seem less pre-planned. But she did look hot and her dancing was respectable. Tyce's choreography made her look good. And her performance benefited the Dizzy Feet Foundation so that kind of makes up for it though I think there are so many other stars out there who would have done a better job.

But let's get down to the real business. Tonight's bottom four were Janette and Kayla for the girls and Jason and Brandon for the guys. They each performed the solo they danced last night and as the hour came to a close we found out that Jason and Janette were going home. I think Jason had it coming but I am a bit shocked at America for not voting for Janette. Last night Mia called her her favorite and tonight Nigel said he thought she was going to win the season.

So, first, what did you think of the celebration and, specifically, Katie Holmes' performance? Second, are you sad about who was sent home? And, as a side note, I rewatched the breast cancer dance and I guess I can see what the appeal is. But I only think it will be memorable because of the topic and not so much because of the performance. By this point last year there were so many memorable performances and few from this season stand out to me. The top six have large shoes to fill and I really hope the next two weeks provide some outstanding performances.

The TV Guide Network goes from unnecessary to Ugly

The TV Guide Network has acquired the rights to air reruns of the ABC show Ugly Betty. The full story can be seen here. This poses a few questions. 1) Why is there even still a TV Guide channel? Don't people have guide buttons for this purpose? People actually still sit and watch the channels scroll across the screen and hope they don't blink when the channel they are waiting for pops up? 2) When people do watch the TV Guide channel isn't it only so they can find something else to watch? Why would someone use this channel to watch a show? There are so many other mediums in which they can watch Ugly Betty reruns (online, DVDs, etc.) that the last place I think I person would turn to would be the TV Guide Network. 3) Why Ugly Betty? Is this just the first show to say yes when the TV Guide Network begged for rights? Or did the TV Guide Network think Ugly Betty would lead to higher viewership?

My final question is for you: Does this make you want to watch the TV Guide Network? I didn't think so.

Paula gets new job offer

Nigel Lythgoe has offered Paula Abdul a spot as a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance if the rumors of her leaving Idol come true. The full story is here. While I agree that she is obviously just as good a dancer as she is a singer, I'm not sure how I feel about this. Do you think she would be an asset or a distraction for the show?

SYTYCD - One of the more boring episodes

This week we are at the top eight and every dancer performed four times. Mia was this week's guest judge and the panel was joined by Ellen Degeneres. It was great that she was there and she did bring some humor, but her critiques had no substance. I'm glad they chose to add her on as an extra judge and not have her as one of the three. And as another point, I think there has been too much commentary lately. The judges talk more than the dancers dance. But, moving on, the show started with a group dance. Here is a recap of the episode as well as my opinion on the dances.

1) Group dance choreographed by Travis Wall
This was a futuristic performance and I like that every style was highlighted. I especially liked the costumes. Also, I agree with Mary that no one stood out as bad. It was danced well but following last week's choreography, I was almost expecting more from Travis.
2) Janette and Evan danced jazz choreographed by Sonya
I think this was a hard hitting and fun routine. It was very Sonya, which is very non-Evan, but I think Evan finally got it with this performance. And I would like to point out that it was hard to keep my eyes off Janette the entire routine. She really is one of the most charismatic dancers I have ever seen.
3) During Kayla's solo she didn't really do anything. She is such a good dancer but her solos always leave me wanting more.
4) Jeanine and Brandon danced a waltz choreographed by Hunter
The lifts were really good but I didn't feel any connection between the pair. The dancing didn't flow, which left the audience feeling disconnected. I agree that it was too slow. I didn't really like it.
5) Jason's solo featured tons of jumps but was nothing special.
6) Melissa and Ade (reunited after only one week apart) danced a cha cha choreographed by Tony and Melanie
This was a sexy routine overall, but I would have to say that it was good not great. I think Melissa's arms were bad and that she should have smiled instead of smirked. But I do think Melissa did well moving her hips. As a ballerina, she could have been horrible but she was better than I expected. Yet, I do agree with the judges who said they expected a bit more.
7) What they heck was with Janette's solo?? She is a SALSA dancer. Her leap looked so awkward and the music was much too slow for her movements. She should never have moved out of her comfort zone.
8) Kayla and Jason danced a Broadway routine choreographed by Tyce
These two really got into the style. There were lots of details in the choreography and the two had to hit the movements exactly with the music, and they followed through. It was great choreography and a great Broadway performance. They were truly playing the parts they were asked to perform, They forced the audience to become a part of the story and setting and it was great.
9) Ade's solo was really great. He performed a hip hop/jazz fusion and it was so entertaining.
10) Janette and Evan danced a rumba choreographed by Tony and Melanie
This is a very passionate style, which worried me because Evan could have sucked. But he didn't suck.; he was pretty OK. As expected Janette was sexy and sensual, but Evan held his own also. Evan was a bit wobbly on his feet and did make some funny faces, but overall they were connected as a couple, which made the dance believable.
11) Melissa's solo looked forced. Her dancing didn't really flow and it was pretty forgettable.
12) Jeanine and Brandon danced a pop jazz routine put together by new choreographer Laurieann Gibson
There was no story with this routine; it was just supposed to be performed. That said it was very hard hitting and the dancers were very together in the movements throughout. It was pretty good even though I disagree with Mary and think they used very little of the stage. It almost felt a bit static. I agree that it was the best thus far of the night, but I don't think it was worth the excitement Nigel portrayed. I do think it was a powerful piece.
13) Evan's solo was so smooth and cool. He dropped his hat and still looked cool as a cucumber on that stage. He makes dancing look so simple and carefree. I love him when he is in his own style.
14) Jeanine's solo was so great I didn't want it to end. She is really coming into her own at this point in the season. It was an impressive solo. It showed technique and was an overall great performance.
15) Melissa and Ade danced a contemporary routine choreographed by Tyce
I am going to say right off the bat that I was not moved to tears as others were. I don't want to come off as heartless, but I really just didn't feel the emotion this theme of breast cancer should have drawn upon. I do agree that these two dancers were the best ones to dance it. It took a lot of trust for Melissa to complete some of the tricks she was asked to do and only Ade could have followed through. That said, I think it was good but I'm not sure it was as wonderful as past dances. It truly was a performance and not a dance. I think it will lead to a lot of sympathy votes, which may or may not be deserved.
16) Brandon's solo was very strong. It was high energy and fast and I liked it.
17) Kayla and Jason danced a hip hop routine choreographed by Shane
After the last two dances Shane choreographed, he had some making up to do and I am happy to report that he succeeded. This was a great dance. It was very exciting and I enjoyed it. I truly believed the zombie storyline and movements. For two contemporary dancers dancing hip hop, it was amazing. They hit it hard and it was entertaining.

In the title I said this was one of the more boring episodes. I don't mean that I did not enjoy some of the dances or that there was nothing spectacular to be seen, I just mean that I expect more from the top eight. Every dance should be memorable and every dance should take my breath away. Good thing they have another week to make it up to me. As for tomorrow, I am so excited to celebrate the 100th episode. The tease they played tonight makes me very excited.

But let's get down to business. Who do you think should go home. We are only a few weeks away from the finale. At this point, who do you think should be named America's Favorite Dancer?

Spoiler: Entourage - "Let's go reintroduce you to the world"

Tonight's episode featured Vince's new Gatsby movie premiere, which was the last step in Vince's return to stardom after a fall last season. We also saw Turtle obsessed with Seth Rogan's Knocked Up character, which can be seen as a sort of personal complex; E asking Sloan to be more than just friends but her turning him down; Lloyd on a crash diet where he only eats one grape every hour; and Ari's friend Andrew having an affair, which Ari thinks will ruin things for him especially since their wives have become great friends. What was especially important about this episode is that by the end each guy was coupled with a girl. The guys truly are going back to basics.

Feel free to leave me comments about how you enjoyed the episode. I, personally, think this season is off to a good start even though I agree with most people who have been saying that the show has been declining in value lately. It may not be the best show on TV, but it is funny and entertaining to watch.

Surprising Idol news

For those interested, and in a turn of events I'm not sure many people were expecting, according to this article Paula Abdul will most likely not be returning to American Idol next season. How do you feel about this? Do you think the show will be the same without her?

I know this is a few days late...

...but I would like to take a moment to honor journalist Walter Cronkite who died at the age of 92 Friday. His obituary can be seen here.

90210 Silver-Ethan-Dixon love triangle minus Ethan

For those who have been wondering what is going to happen in regards to the Silver-Dixon-Ethan love triangle on 90210 now that we know Dustin Milligan is not returning to the show, here is a small inside scoop straight from the lips of Jessica Stroup.

TVGuide.com: Very subtle. Turning to 90210, what will be the status of the Silver-Dixon-Ethan triangle minus Ethan? [Dustin Milligan will not be back for Season 2.]
Stroup: There's a lot to clear up, and in the first episode you're going to see that things have changed and Ethan is no longer a possible candidate for Silver's interest. But he does still have a vital role in that first episode, even if he's just being spoken about. We left off with a big cliff-hanger, where Dixon didn't know if he wanted to be with Silver, and when we pick back up, it's the end of summer break and a lot has happened. Will I kiss Dixon again? Yes, for sure. Will I kiss another boy at another point down the line? Most likely so!

America voted, but who got kicked off?

Last night's SYTYCD episode opened with an Asian inspired, Wade Robson choreographed group dance. It was funky, weird, stylized and very obviously choreographed by Wade.

As for announcements during the show, four choreographers received Emmy nominations: Mia, Tabitha and Napoleon, Tyce and Dimitri. Also, Nigel was not there last night because he was receiving an honorary degree. That left Cat, Debbie and Mary alone to act like silly teenage girls.

Now for the important stuff. The bottom two girls, based solely on votes, were Randi and Melissa. And the bottom two guys were Kupono and Ade. The four then each danced the solo they performed the night before, which had no effect on the outcome. We then found out that it was Randi and Kupono who were sent home.

These two being dismissed only further proves that at this point in the season one bad dance can lead to disaster. As for Melissa and Ade being in the bottom, I think America is waiting for Melissa to entertain us. Yes, she is a beautiful dancer, but she isn't impressive in any way. And I have no explanation for why Ade was in the bottom. Probably because Brandon and Jason danced wonderfully Wednesday night and Evan has a huge fan base.

Next week is time for celebration. Thursday is the 100th SYTYCD episode and it is being celebrated with the Katie Holmes performance, plus past memorable performances will be performed, which means guest appearances from past contestants. Also, Ellen Degeneres will guest judge along with Mia next Wednesday. I am really looking forward to that!

So what do you think about who was sent home? I have to admit I'm not all that disappointed.

The night when height seemed to be a concern for everyone

Starting this week on So You Think You Can Dance, votes alone force two people to be sent home. The judges no longer have any input and it is only their opinions that matter. Also this week, now that we have made it to the top 10, the couples were rearranged, forming new partnerships. This meant that each dancer, who has gotten to know their original partner well, was forced to change and pick up chemistry with a dancer they have never danced with before.

At this point we are no longer voting and cheering on couples; each individual dancer is now on their own. So with the help of guest judge Debbie Allen, who might I add was a bit too nice for a judge, we watched each dancer dance a solo, partner routine and group number last night. We then voted and tonight a boy and a girl will be sent home. Here is a rundown of the dances performed last night.

1) The top five girls danced a group Bollywood routine choreographed by Nakul
This was a very high energy piece. It was so fast yet the girls were together throughout. It had great performance value and I enjoyed it. As the judges pointed out, from that routine no girl stands out as the underdog.
2) Kayla and Evan (the tallest girl and shortest boy) danced a Viennese waltz choreographed by Tony and Melanie
This was a very classy dance. They are both so beautiful to look at that they could have completely messed up and I wouldn't have really noticed. I thought the performance had good rise and fall and I was especially impressed by the lifts Evan completed. The height difference is obvious but they put Evan in heeled shoes and Kayla was barefoot so we didn't even really notice. I enjoyed it but the judges said they did not think it was brought to the next level.
3) Brandon's solo was not all that great. There was too much arm movement and not a lot of substance for me. This is the first time we have seen his solo and I think he is a better dancer than that performance.
4) Janette and Ade danced a hip hop routine choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon
For this routine the couple was asked to be funky and they followed through, though there were moments where it didn't flow as it should have. I think Ade was obviously better than Janette in this genre and Janette was almost visually trying too hard, but the number was fun.
5) Throughout Randi's solo it looked like she wasn't really steady on her feet. I expected more from her.
6) Kupono's dance was really weird but in a good way. It was interesting choreography.
7) Janine and Jason danced a contemporary routine choreographed by past contestant Travis Wall
This was the best dance of the night, by far, and it was performed by who I would call the underdogs. In this performance there were a lot of lifts and it was very physical, but at the same time they had great chemistry. The choreography was sexy and steamy, but the dancing brought it to the next level. They were mesmerizing. It was a great story and it was performed well. They both proved themselves as great dancers with this routine.
8) Melissa's solo was a little too ballet focused for me tonight. I was not too impressed.
9) Evan's solo reminded me why I root for him. He is so entertaining and smooth. This was a great solo.
10) Kayla's solo proved, once again, that she has great technique. But we already know this. She needs help learning to choreograph interesting solos.
11) Randi and Kupono danced a paso doble choreographed by Tony and Melanie
From the very beginning this performance looked forced. It just did not flow. Randi even fell at the end. Neither looked comfortable and they had no chemistry. This was a pretty awful routine.
12) During Ade's solo he was moving too frantically for the song he was performing to. But dancing with no shirt totally bought him votes.
13) Janine's solo showed off her technique and caught my attention, which is exactly what a solo should do.
14) Jason was cool and quirky in his solo. I kind of liked it.
15) Melissa and Brandon danced a Broadway routine choreographed by Tyce
This was, for lack of a better word, a groovy routine. They were obviously having fun. The dance especially showed off Brandon's strengths, which was good. At times I did think the routine seemed a bit hectic and the smoke at the end was stupid, but I give this a thumbs up overall. I think it was good, but not great.
16) Janette attacked her solo. She was very sexy. This is about as good as it gets for a solo salsa routine.
17) The top five guys danced an African routine choreographed by Jeffrey Page
The last 30 seconds on this routine were GREAT, but the rest was only OK for me. They obviously had a harder time than the girls and they did struggle a bit, but it was very high energy and fun. They must have been exhausted by the end. And, as a side note, I feel back that both Mary and Nigel singled out Evan during their comments. I think they all did just fine.

After last night's performances, I have no idea who America will decide to send home. Based on just these performances, Randi and Kupono stand out as the worst two, but it really all depends on who has the most fans. We'll have to wait until tonight to find out.

And this year's Emmy nominations are....

Here is the link to a blog post written by the Globe's Matthew Gilbert about the Emmy nominees, which were announced this morning. At the bottom you will find the full list, but he also gripes about who got left out and who, deservingly, finally got nominated. Check it out.

Too late to post tonight...

...but to hold you over until I write my SYTYCD comments tomorrow, here is an article the Globe's Joanna Weiss wrote before this season started that I just came across now after she linked it from the Viewer Discretion blog. It summarizes all of the reasons I love this show.

Sad news for those who were looking forward to Parenthood

If you are like me and were looking forward to the fall premiere of the new NBC show Parenthood, then the following news may make you sad. Apparently Maura Tierney has some health issues and the studio has decided to push back production of Parenthood until she can participate. So for now, the show is no longer slated to air starting in the fall and will instead begin its run midseason. NBC has decided to push up production of the new show Mercy, which was supposed to start midseason, but will now start airing in the fall. The full story is here. One interesting thing that is pointed out, Michelle Trachtenberg is one of the stars signed on to Mercy so with it starting production months early, how will that affect her stint on Gossip Girl? I was so looking forward to Georgina drama; I hope she doesn't disappear right away. UPDATE: Tierney announced today that she has a tumor in her breast. For the full story, click here.

Napoleon on TV?

I honestly don't think Jon Heder will ever be known as anyone but Napoleon Dynamite, but he is getting another chance to prove he can play other roles. After a few other movie gigs, including in Blades of Glory and Just Like Heaven, Heder has found a new home staring in a Comedy Central show that has not yet been named. Here is the full story. Some of the highlights include that the show will be written and produced by Will Ferrell; the show is slated to start airing sometime in 2010; and the show is being described as "groundbreaking." Follow the link for more and let me know if you are interested. I think this just may be worth it.

Spoiler: Entourage premiere finds every character on their own

Before I summarize Entourage's season premiere, I have two things I want to say. 1) I love this show and am so happy the sixth season has finally started. I now have a reason to look forward to Sunday night. 2) I think it is so funny how the "previously on..." segment before the start of the episode literally showed everything that happened last season. I could have not watched last season and known exactly what was going on. Now, onto a summary.

We pick up at least a few months after where we left off. Vince has already filmed the Martin Scorsese Great Gatsby film and is doing press for the movie. Most importantly, during this episode Vince visits The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and also has to pass a driver's test. On Leno, Vince is hysterical and everyone agrees that this completes his comeback. As for the driving test, apparently Vince never got his license but because he is doing a movie in which he plays Enzo Ferrari, he decides to get his license. Only he sucks at driving. But luckily the driving instructor is easily bought off and Vince gets his license, even after hitting some cones, because he bribes the instructor with passes to the Gatsby premiere.

In other happenings, Lloyd asks Ari for a promotion and even threatens to leave the company if Ari does not follow through. This is one of the first times we really see Lloyd stand up for himself and it is great. This promotion would mean Lloyd would become an agent and no longer be Ari's assistant. Ari does not want this to happen because he knows how wonderful Lloyd is as an assistant. At the end of the episode, Ari proposes that is Lloyd can survive 100 days as an agent, then he can get the promotion. But Ari plans on essentially hazing him (the first task is to lose weight) so this should be very interesting.

Also on this episode we have E who somehow has become a ladies man. The guys keep ragging on him about it, but he seems to be enjoying this new side of himself; a side that is willing to just have fun with women. Then E gets a call from Sloan who offers him the opportunity to sublet her friend's beautiful house cheap. While they banter back and forth and flirt, E tells her he hasn't really considered moving into a place on his own but he does tell her he will consider it. After talking about it with Vince, who swears he will be fine living alone, E takes Sloan up on the offer. He sublets the house and gets closer to Sloan, which causes the guys to bust him about having feelings for her again.

But what this episode really showed was that each of the four guys are starting to have their own lives: Turtle is still dating Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Drama is working a lot, Eric is a successful manager who will soon be living on his own and Vince's career is back on track. The final scene of the episode shows Vince returning home to an empty house. Maybe this is foreshadowing the fact that the guys may be growing apart a bit.

Also, as a side note, I am a feminist through and through. And as sexist as most of Ari's lines are, I love them. He is so funny. Only Ari Gold can say the things he says and I be OK with it.

So what did you think of the first episode? I think it sets us up nicely for a great season. I personally cannot wait for next week when it is the Gatsby movie premiere.

The top 10 is revealed

Tonight's group dance, again choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon, was very entertaining. The dancers sure were rocking and were hard hitting in their movements. The choreography was sharp and exactly what I would expect from NappyTabbs.

Two side notes before I start on the important information: tonight was Nigel's 60th birthday (!!) and, sadly, the dancers will not be paying tribute to Michael Jackson because the show was denied the rights to the music.

Also, I am disappointed that Nigel told us that the judges are told on Thursday mornings who is in the bottom. He said they already make their decision about who to send home before the live results show even airs. So the whole dance-for-your-life thing seems a lot less necessary now. Nigel said the solos can still sway the judges to change their mind, but I guess the result show just seems a bit less exciting now. I am disappointed to hear this news.

Anyway, moving on, the bottom three was Caitlin & Jason; Janine & Phillip; and Melissa & Ade. I am a bit shocked Melissa and Ade found themselves in the bottom and Kayla and Kupono were safe. As for their solos, Caitlin tried really hard to be cute in her routine and overall it was a nice performance; Jason danced around hectically with no shirt on and I didn't think the routine was all that great; Janine danced well technically, but throughout her performance she was in no way connecting with the audience; Phillip is always entertaining, but this particular routine wasn't the best thing I've ever seen; Melissa played up the sexy ballerina thing and her performance was entertaining because it was not classical ballet but instead a jazzy ballet routine; and Ade showed that he is not only good technically, but that he is also entertaining and an exciting dancer.

At the end of the night, the judges chose to send Caitlin and Phillip home. I'm in no way surprised by the decision to send Caitlin home, but I am shocked that the judges saved Jason over Phillip. \

Anyway, now that we have made it to the top 10, each dancer is on their own. They are now singles instead of pairs and, as Nigel pointed out, the dancers have to start proving themselves as stars. The judges no longer make decisions about who goes home so starting next week the viewers have complete control on who stays and who goes. This is a lot of responsibility and I hope we are up to the challenge.

For the record, here is a list of the top 10:
- Melissa
- Ade
- Kayla
- Kupono
- Jason
- Janine
- Randi
- Evan
- Janette
- Brandon

Who do you think stands out at this point? Who would you like to see win? Are you sad to see Caitlin or Phillip sent home? Leave me comments.

News for Joss Whedon fans

According to this story, the fall premiere of Dollhouse has been pushed back a week to Friday, Sept. 25 so that Joss Whedon can have more solid input into the episode. The series creator will write and direct the show's sophomore season opener. I'm totally willing to wait one extra week if Whedon is promising greatness, which I sure is what he is striving for. I just hope the second season of this show continues at the height at which the first season peaked and ended.

Six couples, 12 entertaining performances

This week on So You Think You Can Dance the remaining six couples performed twice each and also danced with their partner for the last time since next week is when the pairs begin rotating weekly. Other housekeeping info before I get to my opinions on the dances: Cat looked gorgeous, as always, and Tyce Diorio was the guest judge. Now that that is out of the way, let's move on.

1) Melissa and Ade
Dance 1: disco choreographed by Doriana
I think that, at times, Melissa seemed hesitant in her movements but on the other hand Ade was in it 100 percent. Ade let go and really performed. I think all disco routines always seem so rushed, but this was a very entertaining routine. The lifts were impressive and it was a fun dance. Melissa even fell at the end, but she recovered well and the dance overall was so good that the fumble can easily be overlooked.
Dance 2: waltz choreographed by Ron Montez
This was a great dance for Melissa and it was a very entertaining routine. They are a great pair and it showed in how this dance flowed wonderfully. Melissa has the technique to pull off any dance and Ade has the strength that makes him the perfect partner. The best word to describe this dance is beautiful and, as Mary said, they are a classy pair.
2) Kayla and Kupono
Dance 1: contemporary choreographed by Mia
This was a very powerful dance that worked because of the powerful choreography. Kayla was an addict and she was addicted to Kupono. I was so wonderful mostly because they danced it so well. Throughout the entire thing I was in the story, believing every moment. The performance gave me chills. They were really acting and in character, which, as Tyce pointed out, made for a fantastic package.
Dance 2: broadway choreographed by Joey
After Joey's last broadway routine trainwreck, I was expecting the worst here. But this week the choreography was better. I liked the story presented here and once again this pair was asked to play roles. Only this time, their characters did not come to life as they were supposed to. I felt like their dancing was a bit jolty and I agree that they missed the style of the piece they were given.
3) Caitlin and Jason
Dance 1: foxtrot choreographed by Tony
This foxtrot had a jazzy undertone and both dancers looked like they were really having fun. The dance was smooth and classy but the choreography left me wanting more. I didn't think there was any real excitement value to the dance. I was good, but not memorable.
Dance 2: lyrical jazz choreographed by Mandy
This is both Caitlin and Jason's style so I was expecting to be impressed. And while I enjoyed it and thought it was a beautiful dance, I was not blown away. They did both seem very comfortable in the dance and they got the chance to show off their strengths, which was good. They were always there for one another and were together throughout so it was an overall good routine. But I do not think it was the great Caitlin talked about striving for.
4) Janine and Phillip
Dance 1: Russian folk dance choreographed by Youri and Lilia
Throughout the routine Janine seemed a bit off balance and at one point she even tripped on Phillip's foot. I agree 100 percent with Nigel that the dance was the problem. The choreography and style looked hard, and I have no doubt that it was a difficult style to master, but I can't see people wanting to vote for that performance. They did what they were given well, but I don't think it will be enough.
Dance 2: jive choreographed by Tony
This was not the trainwreck I was expecting. Phillip always struggles outside of his comfort zone, which is understandable since he has no training, but this week he actually held his own. They were obviously having fun and I was into it. I was pleasantly surprised with how well they performed and with how much I enjoyed it.
5) Randi and Evan
Dance 1: hip hop choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon
I think these two did surprisingly well with this style. Having Tabitha and Napoleon as their choreographers definitely helped them because a more hard hitting, rough routine would have been disastrous, but in this routine they were hitting every move. They did nothing wrong, were very entertaining and overall did great.
Dance 2: samba choreographed by Pasha and Anya
This was a very animal-movement inspired dance and the choreography was pretty good, but Randi and Evan just didn't look comfortable. On a high note, their lifts were executed much better than I expected, but I agree with the judges who said that Randi stole the show and Evan dropped back a bit.
6) Janette and Brandon
Dance 1: Argentine tango choreographed by Leonardo and Mariam
For the tango to be believable, the couple needs to be passionate. And not only did Janette and Brandon follow through with this, but they were also very sexy. The choreography was exciting for a tango and the execution was outstanding. The judges even gave them a standing ovation. This was a great routine.
Dance 2: jazz choreographed by Wade Robson
This was by far the best dance on the night in regards to both performance and choreography. It was a great way to end the show. Wade is such a brilliant choreographer. And these two were some very smooth criminals. It was fun dancing and an overall great performance.

I really have no idea who will be in the bottom tomorrow. Who I know will not - Janette and Brandon. Both of their dances were great. They are the only safe ones in my mind. But someone has to go so that we can move on to the top 10. Who do you think will be in the bottom tomorrow based on tonight's performances?

Michael Jackson memorial

Sadly, I did not get to watch as much of the memorial service yesterday as I would have liked because I lost power in a thunderstorm, but the pieces I did see were so moving. For those interested, TvGuide.com has this list of the most memorable moments and the Globe's Joanna Weiss live blogged during the event. Check it out and let me know what you think were the most moving moments.

More 90210 guest star news

I know I am a few days late in posting this, but since it has been getting so much attention I now feel like I have no choice. Rumer Willis, daughter to Bruce and Demi, is set to play a lesbian journalist who works at the school newspaper on the second episode of 90210's sophomore season. The AP has the full story here. I'm not sure how I feel about this. For one, I don't understand why it is necessary to announce her appearance and attach that she is a lesbian right off the bat. If she were playing a straight journalist the distinction would not be made. I just hope her role is not too stereotypical because that would only lead to me losing more respect for the show.

OTH scoop

Every Wednesday TvGuide.com posts this item, which they call the Mega Buzz, and it is a chance for them to answer reader questions. This week there is a question and answer I think might interest followers of this blog and it has to do with One Tree Hill.

Will One Tree Hill bring back Rachel now that Peyton and Lucas are gone? — Fernando
Will Robert Buckley be shirtless on One Tree Hill? — Sarah
MATT: Yes, Fernando, Danneel Harris is returning for a handful of episodes as Rachel, though I'm not entirely sure why. Maybe the not-quite-reformed bad girl will become Brooke's new BFF? What I do know is that Rachel is part of a "great storyline," says a source. To Sarah, I also have good news for you: Count on plenty of bare-chested Buckley, as he plays Nathan's sports agent.

I think this is pretty good news. I'd love some closure in regards to the Rachel storyline and I agree that Brooke is going to need a new friend. Plus, who doesn't love news when it pertains to Robert Buckley with no shirt?

10 Things ... I like about the show

I won't actually make you suffer through a list of what I like and dislike about the new ABC Family television show 10 Things I Hate About You, which is based on the 1999 hit movie starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, but I will mention a few things that make this show worth watching.

First off, the show very closely resembles the movie, which for those who enjoyed the movie means a show that is recognizable and easy to fall in love with. Second, the actors they have playing the characters on the show fit very nicely into the identities originally created by the movie cast: Cameron is obviously so smitten and head over heels in love with Bianca that he would do anything for her; Bianca is still ditzy and only cares about popularity, which leads to her ignoring that there is a bigger and more important world that she should be a part of; Kat is, as always, the cynical activist who does whatever she thinks necessary to prove a point; Patrick is the mysterious yet adorable bad boy who everyone wants to get to know better; etcetera.

My one big concern with this show is that it so closely follows the action of the movie that within a few weeks there will be no material and when left to come up with its own storylines the show will falter. This 97 minute movie is now a television show that, I'm sure, creators want to last for seasons. So they have their work cut out for them in that they need to reinvent something that already has a prescribed presence in many people's minds.

Well enough on my end, I want to know if anyone else watched. If you did, how did you like it? Also, are there any huge fans of the movie who have strong feelings of either like or dislike and wouldn't mind sharing their opinions? Let me know.

You are the weakest dancer, goodbye

Tonight's So You Think You Can Dance results show opened with a broadway group dance performance. It was choreographed by Tyce and overall was very cool. I especially enjoyed the part where some of the dancers jumped through the picture frame as it moved upstage. There was a lot of running around during the performance and I thought it was very high energy. One side thought, does anyone else agree that Kayla looked naked and because of it stood out from everyone else? It was a bit weird.

My mention about Cat tonight has nothing to do with her outfit, but instead her awful, messy bed-head hair. She looked a bit too disheveled for me.

As for who was in the bottom three, Randi and Evan were safe but Karla and Vitolio, Kayla and Kupono and Janine and Phillip all had to dance for their lives. Now for my critique of their solos:
1) I liked that Karla danced a solo with a story. She was a bird and she captured my attention even though she only danced for a a very short time. It was pretty good.
2) I think Vitolio's solos are always boring. I was not impressed at all.
3) Kayla usually has better solos. Tonight she was all legs, arms and hair flipping. She hardly seemed to move. She in no way used the stage. I didn't like it.
4) Kupono's solo also sucked. He was much too laid back during his performance and it led to him doing little.
5) We have never seen Janine's solo and I have a newfound appreciation for her. She is a wonderful dancer. Her solo was great.
6) Phillip is the best at his style, we all know this, so that is why I was slightly excited to see his solo. And I was not disappointed. It was a very entertaining performance.

In the end, though the judges told Kupono and Kayla that their solos were not up to par, Karla and Vitolio were the ones sent home. I have to say that I am not shocked. These two obviously do not have a following so to keep them would have only led to them being in the bottom again next week.

Anyone heartbroken about the most recent departures? I'm just glad we kept Randi and Evan out of the bottom. I do hope they step it up soon, though. There's always next week, I guess.

GG gets another new castmate

Hilary Duff has signed on for a multi-episode arc on Gossip Girl to play a movie star who enrolls in NYU looking for a normal college experience. Here is the full story. We already know that that she will be Vanessa's roommate, but there are already guesses out there that she ends up romantically linked with Dan. I'm not sure yet how I feel about this announcement. I have never really loved nor hated Duff, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this turns out.

I'm disappointed the SYTYCD people think we are idiots

After tonight's performance show, are we really supposed to believe that So You Think You Can Dance is truly random, because I have never been more sure that it is not. The show featured the first ever classical pas de deux and it was danced by this season's ballerina? That doesn't seem so random. AND after struggling for the past few weeks, fan favorite Phillip again drew hip hop? It has only been four weeks and he and Janine have already danced hip hop twice. Plus, both times Tabitha and Napoleon were the choreographers. That seems a bit too coincidental to me.

Anyway, this said, I liked the dances this week. I am just a bit disappointed overall. But all I had to do was look at Cat's gorgeous dress and I smiled. Hot pink is so her color.

For the record, this week's guest judge was Mia Michaels and at the top of the show Cat prompted her by asking a question about "a male dancer." We all knew Cat was talking about Brandon and Mia admitted that she no longer hates him. Thank goodness, because I don't think I could have taken any more of Mia's bitchiness.

Here is the usual recap of the dances along with my opinion on how the couples performed.

1) Janette and Brandon danced a cha cha choreographed by Jean Marc
Though Nigel did not point it out as I would have liked, Brandon very obviously performed to the audience throughout this dance, which left his partner loveless. After the performance, Nigel called it the best cha cha ever performed on the show and Mary put the pair on the hot tamale train. I liked it, but I don't know if I would have praised it so highly. I thought the dance seemed rushed at times and the beginning seemed very choppy to me.
2) Kayla and Kupono danced a contemporary routine choreographed by Sonya
This was what Sonya called a death dance and I loved loved loved the choreography. Sonya at times is a bit too out there for me, but I thought this was a great dance both in terms of choreography and execution. The dancers really hit their movements and the choreography really showcased the dancers' technical strengths. I believed the story and found the dance to be memorable. I enjoyed it immensely.
3) Randi and Evan danced a broadway routine choreographed by some woman I have never seen before Joey Dowling
I do not think the dancers did anything wrong during their performance but I did think the choreography was bad. It was a very character-driven dance and it was entertaining, but I don't think it was memorable. Mia blamed Randi and Evan for the dance failing, but I really think the blame should be put on the choreographer here. This was Evan's genre and he couldn't succeed. I'm worried about them. They are my favorite dancers, but I think they may find themselves in the bottom tomorrow.
4) Caitlin and Jason danced a pop jazz routine choreographed by Brian Friedman
This "alien dance" was so weird, which worries me because the last Brian choreographed dance led to Kayla losing Max even though the pair did not belong in the bottom. Regardless, as weird as I thought the dance was, I believed it. Caitlin totally dominated everything from her movements to the stage to Jason. She was in control. While I think this performance deserves votes, I don't think people will get it so they may find themselves in the bottom and this week who knows if they will be saved.
5) Janine and Phillip danced hip hop choreographed by NappyTabbs
For this dance the two were chained together. And might I point out that I loved the choreography. Tabitha and Napoleon are amazing. What was even better was that Phillip and Janine were really executing the dance. They were hitting it! I loved it, but I wonder if that is only because Phillip is so spectacular in his own field? Also, I would like to say that Janine is just as great as Phillip when it comes to hip hop, which is saying a lot.
6) Melissa and Ade danced a classical pas de deux choreographed by Thordal Christensen
These two were asked to dance Romeo and Juliet. And while I think the dance was beautiful, I was expecting more. Melissa again proved that she has wonder ballet technique and Ade got more chances to prove how strong he is, but overall I feel like they did little. But, as Mia pointed out, you can't really fake ballet, so overall it was pretty good.
7) Karla and Vitolio (the new couple) danced a quickstep choreographed by Jean Marc
The quickstep always gets dancers in trouble and is notoriously known as one of the most difficult dances. But tonight the dance was so entertaining and they really did a great job. I do have to agree with the judges who said the amazing choreography made the dance.

That's it for tonight. Who do you think should be sent home? Are you excited about the Dizzy Feet Foundation announcement? Or maybe you are more looking forward to the Katie Holmes broadway routine performance on the 100th episode July 23. Leave me comments about your thoughts about tonight's episode.
