Yearly, Matt Lauer travels to exotic and underpublicized countries, a different place every day for a week, in a segment called "Where in the World is Matt Lauer?" It has been announced that the Today show will forgo this expensive segment this year and opt for a road trip across America. All four co-anchors - Lauer, Meredith Vieira, Al Roker and Ann Curry - will explore affordable vacation spots. This series, "Today Takes a Vacation," will begin May 4.The article here says that this decision to cancel the original series was made when viewers were asked to suggest places for the Where in the World segment, but viewers complained that in the current economic climate it would be a waste to spend so much money on the trips. My opinion on this is that Today show executives should not have had to be told by viewers that this segment was unnecessary; This decision should have been clear from the start.
