Below is the AP news brief:
Nearly six months after Walter Cronkite’s death, his voice is leaving the “CBS Evening News.’’ His introduction of anchor Katie Couric was replaced yesterday by a voice-over featuring actor Morgan Freeman. The CBS News anchor recorded the introduction, played at the beginning of most newscasts, when Couric started at CBS in 2006. Cronkite’s voice was kept on the air even after his death July 17. Having Freeman on board gives CBS the flexibility to record different intros when Couric has special reports and is on location, said CBS News and Sports President Sean McManus. (AP)
While I appreciate the need to be able to change the intro as necessary, Cronkite is a piece of journalistic history and I am sad to say goodbye. Hearing his voice nightly was a reminder of the golden days of journalism. I don't doubt Freeman will do a wonderful job in the position, I only think Cronkite deserves to be recognized as the news program moves in a different direction.
