I wanted to write about Conan O'Brien's first night as host of the Tonight Show and since that happened two days ago, I am going to review his first two episodes. To begin with, I want to reiterate that I do not particularly like Conan, but I have to admit that he has been pleasantly entertaining his first few episodes.
His first show began with a prepared package video of him having just realized that he did not move to LA, as needed, from New York. Conan then proceeds to run across the country only to realize he forgot his keys in NY and has to bulldoze down the studio door. Conan's first guest was Will Ferrell and his first musical guest was Pearl Jam. One of the funnier parts of the night was when Will sang Conan a song to celebrate the new show and it was a song about goodbyes: "Don't get me wrong, I'm pulling for you. But this whole thing is a crap-shoot at best," Will said.
Day two saw guest Tom Hanks and a musical performance by Green Day. For the second night, Conan asked his guest for tips about the LA area and while Will had fun with this the night before, Tom was pretty serious and praised In-N-Out Burger, a California staple.
Some things that are different and may take getting used to: 1) Conan talks for much longer at the top of the show before taking his first commercial, 2) They go to a commercial following the musical performance coming back just to say goodbye before leading into Late Night, 3) There is a new set and I have to admit that I love it. Blue as the color works well and I love the LA skyline behind Conan's desk. Both nights the crowd was very enthusiastic. At the top of the show both times the crowd chanted Conan and cheered for what seemed like forever. I think this proves that he will continue to have a fan base.
That's it from my end. What have you thought so far? Do you have high expectations? Do you think Conan will succeed in this time slot? I'd love to hear your opinions.
