With only one week to go before we name America's favorite dancer, I have no idea who I think should or will win this season. And, as Nigel pointed out, no one really stands out as stars right now. The public has been voting on choreography instead of performance since all of the dancers have kind of leveled off in regards to talent. (For the record, this is how I feel about the breast cancer dance from last week. I think it was worthy of votes because of the choreography but not necessarily the performance.) But I do think Mary's advice for the voters was important: Don't just look at this week's performance, reflect on everything and make a decision based on that. All this said, by the end of tonight's episode we will have a top four and we will be oh so close to naming a winner. But before we do that, let's recap what happened on last night's show. And, before I forget, let me say that Lil C was the guest judge.
1) The guys performed a group routine choreographed by Sonya
This was supposed to be a Willy Wonka themed dance, but I didn't really see this connection. Regardless, I thought this was a memorable performance. They are all so strong, both as dancers and physically, and they were so together in their movements. It was great, quirky choreography and they all performed it well. For the judges, they really need to stop singling out Evan. He's in the top three for a reason and he did just as well as the other two guys.
2) Jeanine and Ade danced a samba choreographed by Louis
This was not choreographed as a traditional samba; Louis pushed the envelope of sexiness and there were even moments of hip hop and jazz thrown into the choreography. Some moments of the performance were great but others were awful; this goes for their hip work as well. The dancing was choppy at times and the samba rolls sucked. It looked forced and I wasn't really feeling it. But Jeanine looked sexy.
3) Kayla's solos always disappoint. This week she just kicked and flung her arms around.
4) Melissa and Evan danced a Broadway routine choreographed by Tyce
This is totally Evan's style and he was at home in this performance. The dance was high energy and their personalities really got the chance to shine. It was fun choreography and the performance met my expectations.
5) Ade's solo this week was too frantic. The only good moment was when he paused and smiled for the camera.
6) Kayla and Brandon danced a contemporary routine choreographed by Stacey Tookey
This routine was full of very sensual/powerful movements. I think Kayla outperformed Brandon here but I do think Brandon was always there for her. I loved the beginning when Kayla was in the foreground and Brandon was dancing in the background. I think this was great choreography and the performance was moving.
7) I have no real comment on Melissa's solo, but I do want to say that I just wasn't feeling it tonight.
8) Jeanine and Ade's second performance was a Tabitha and Napoleon hip hop routine
The premise of this dance was that the couple had just been evicted from their apartment. They really attacked the movements and the anger was portrayed successfully but there were moments when I wish it had been more hard hitting. When they danced with the boxes on their feet it looked dangerous, but overall I believed the dance and enjoyed it.
9) Brandon's solo was breathtaking. It was full of very powerful movements, which matched the powerful music. And the fact that he was mostly naked will certainly get him votes. He truly left it all on the stage with that performance and proved he deserves to be in the top finale.
10) For Melissa and Evan's second dance they performed a quickstep choreographed by Louis
This dance style is almost always the kiss of death. With this performance in particular, the song, and therefore the choreography, was so fast. Because of this the dance felt rushed and I could not appreciate it. It was OK, but it didn't impress me in any way.
11) Jeanine always manages to be entertaining and show technique with her solos.
12) Evan has such a great personality. I love watching his solos. And, personally, I think this was one of his best solos.
13) Kayla and Brandon danced a Doriana disco for their second dance
As usual, this dance was so fast, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. Brandon is made for this style because he is so strong. I thought the death spirals were awful and some of the transitions were choppy, but I really liked the lifts. Overall, it was a good routine but I did not enjoy it as much as Mary and Nigel did.
14) The girls performed a group routine choreographed by Sonya
In this dance the girls were supposed to portray superheroes. It was a powerful and sharp performance that was, once again, choreographed excellently. I don't think the girls were as great as the guys, but it was still impressive.
After these performances I cannot imagine the finale without Brandon and Kayla. That said, I think Melissa and Ade should be sent home. What do you think? Are you excited about the finale next week/sad the season is done? Who are you rooting for to win?
