For Echo's latest engagement, Topher did more than just implant a personality; He changed her physical being and made it so that she could breast feed. So when things in the engagement go south and Echo fears for her and the baby's lives, she is extracted. But after Topher swipes her, she wakes up and punches him. Paul is smart enough to realize that she has no memories, but that the swipe did not remove the maternal instincts he implanted her with. She had returned to the home to save the baby from the father who she thought wanted him dead.
Later, when Paul gets Echo alone and everyone is safe, she talks about how she doesn't only remember everything about her past identities, but she feels it all. When Paul suggests telling Topher so he can fix it, she says the way she is now is better than feeling nothing. And, in another act of heroism, Paul releases Echo from her obligation to help him bring down the dollhouse. He is willing to do it on his own, while also promising to help her get out safely.
