Tuesday's So You Think You Can Dance episode, which showed footage of the auditions in Atlanta and featured Lil C as the guest judge, had the judges asking for more than just great technique, but also for a great performance. It happens a lot with immature dancers - they have everything they need to be great, but they do not engage the audience in their performance. This was one of the major points of Tuesday's episode and I think it is an important lesson many dancers need to learn.
Then came Wednesday night's episode, which took place in New Orleans. Nigel was receiving his honorary degree during the filming of this episode so joining Mary as the judge was Lil C and Adam Shankman. I think that without Nigel though, the remaining judges went a bit crazy. They put an awful dancer through to choreography just because he was fun and entertaining. There was a lot of laughing coming from these three and it made me wonder if they were taking things seriously. They even admitted to missing Nigel, but only in the context of dealing with bad dancers because he usually knows what to say so that he is still being constructive.
Also during Wednesday's episode we received a list of things not to do in an audition, courtesy of Mary Murphy. Here it is:
1) Don't pull your hat down over your eyes
2) Stop reaching out to nowhere
3) No unnecessary rubbing of body parts
4) Men need to stop booty shaking
Her main message was that to impress the judges the dancers need to do more and be better than ever before, so the above items will not get you anywhere but sent home.
